Amazon Stopped Shipping to Australia

A couple of months ago Australian shoppers woke up to the disheartening news that the online retail giant, Amazon, would soon stop making international shipments to Australia. The news came in the wake of the government's recent changes to online GST (Goods & Services Tax) law, which now requires overseas businesses to collect the tax on products under $1000. Despite the nationwide outcry, however, the government didn’t renege on its stand, forcing Amazon to go through with their plan.

On July 1, 2018, American Amazon indeed stopped shipping international purchases to Australia. Instead, Australian shoppers are now forced to use Amazon’s local site, which not only offers a far smaller range of items, but also the products it carries are sinfully more expensive than those available on the international site.

It is now official that the E-commerce giant Amazon no longer ships its commodities from their US-based Amazon HQ to Australia. They have subsequently redirected back all the Australian customers who tend to use the US-based online marketplace to shop via Amazon’s Australian subdivision.

How GST change will impact Australian shoppers

How will GST affect Australian shoppers? The GST change means that everyone will be forced to honor the sales law since all Australian addresses will be blocked from other sites entirely. The E-commerce giant has not yet explained precisely which commodities will be available to Australian shoppers from the Aussie-based Amazon store. This is despite the news that the upcoming store promises to offer as many goods as possible.

Australian consumers reacted immediately:

I can't buy anything from as an Australian customer. I've been using it since 2014, now I don't know what to do. Most things are expensive in Australia when it comes to books, video games, movies (I usually buy video games and books).’ - said one of Reddit users.

Will Amazon still operate in Australia?

With the rollout of the new laws governing GST on overseas purchases in July 2018, Amazon changed its policies regarding Aussies accessing Amazon US. But, in fact, Amazon continues to operate in Australia via its Australian site that offers a smaller range of products which are usually more expensive than identical products sold at Amazon US.

For example, the popular among PC enthusiasts Unicomp Ultra Classic Keyboard costs $105 on but $306 on, which means a 160 percent markup.

How to shop Amazon US from Australia

When all’s said and done, we realize that Amazon’s move was imminent. For many months, many Australian customers have wondered if GST would affect Amazon. And their worst fears have come to pass. But, there’s some good news - there is still a way to shop US Amazon and ship internationally to Australia.

Here is a foolproof, step-by-step guide to Amazon shipping to Australia and to getting around this unfortunate block.

Step #1: Sign Up for a VPN Service

The GST-related Amazon block centers on the premise that people shopping with an Australian IP are located in Australia and therefore should be redirected to the local Amazon site. Thankfully, there is a way you can access from Australia. That’s where using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) comes in especially handy.

And the whole process is pretty simple. Once you’ve signed up for a VPN service, just choose a stable US IP address. You see, VPNs are akin to go-betweens for your internet connection. In fact, many people outside the US use this service to circumvent geographical restrictions applied by companies like Netflix, Hulu, etc.

The good news is that there are myriads of VPNs to choose from, including IPVanish, ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and TunnelBear, just to name a few. Be sure to select the right one to get around the geoblock on Australian shoppers.

Step #2: Sign Up for an Account with Parcl

Once you’re sure that you can access through a VPN, you can now sign up for an account with a reliable freight forwarding service. This is where Parcl, one of the world’s leading package forwarding services, brings its A-game. Parcl will provide you with a free US shipping address, so that you could place an order at Amazon. Then a Parcl package forwarder will receive your package and ship your Amazon US buys to Australia.

Step #3: Wait for Shipment to Arrive from Amazon US to Australia

It’s that simple and hassle-free. Parcl is hands down the best way to ship from Amazon to Australia following the July 1 GST law’s effect on Amazon.
